Return source
Who pays, why the return exists, and which risk the investor is accepting.
Asset-class research
“Alternative” is a broad label, not a shared risk profile. Closed-end funds, private credit, real estate, commodities, derivatives, and tokenized claims can behave very differently. A structure-first process makes the differences visible.
Look through the wrapper
Begin with the underlying economic asset and the cash it can generate. Then identify the legal claim held by the investor, the entities and counterparties in the ownership chain, the fees deducted, and the conditions for transfer or redemption.
A wrapper can improve access, tax handling, settlement, or diversification. It can also add leverage, valuation uncertainty, governance, and liquidity mismatch. The wrapper should be analyzed as a separate layer of value and risk.

Selected structures
| Structure | Primary research focus | Common blind spot |
|---|---|---|
| Closed-end fund | NAV, discount, leverage, distribution, governance. | Treating the discount as the entire thesis. |
| REIT | Property cash flow, leases, capital spending, debt. | Using dividend yield without balance-sheet analysis. |
| Private credit | Underwriting, covenants, collateral, recovery, liquidity. | Equating infrequent pricing with low risk. |
| Commodity exposure | Spot price, futures curve, roll, storage, vehicle costs. | Assuming the product tracks spot one-for-one. |
| Tokenized claim | Legal rights, custody, redemption, smart contracts, market depth. | Confusing settlement technology with asset quality. |
Portfolio role
The asset may provide income, inflation sensitivity, diversification, return from illiquidity, or exposure to a specific market. State the expected role and the environment in which it may fail.
Every allocation has an opportunity cost. Compare the expected net benefit with a simpler mix designed for the same objective, including fees, taxes, liquidity reserves, and monitoring burden.
